Beyond Carp: Exploring Other Exciting Coarse Fish Species

Carp are hugely popular, but there is a whole world of exciting coarse fish waiting for anglers who are willing to try something different. Branching out to other species keeps your fishing fresh, teaches you new skills and often leads to some of the most memorable days on the bank.

    Why Fish Beyond Carp?

Targeting other species means learning new waters, new methods and new fish behaviour. It can also mean quieter banks, simpler tackle and the thrill of a different kind of fight. Many anglers find that the skills they pick up help their carp fishing too.

    Exciting Species to Try

    Perch

Striped, aggressive and beautiful, perch are brilliant fun on light lure tackle or with worms and small livebait alternatives. They are found in rivers, canals and lakes across the UK.

    Tench

Tench are famous for their powerful fight and love of early summer mornings. Try a float or feeder with sweetcorn, maggots or worms near weed beds and lily pads.

    Barbel

Barbel are strong river fish that thrive in flowing water. A quiver tip rod, a feeder and some pellets or meat can be a winning combination.

    Chub

Chub are inquisitive and offer action in rivers all year round. Bread, cheese paste and lures can all tempt them from under overhanging trees.

    Pike

As the top predator in many waters, pike provide a real challenge during the colder months, using lures or deadbaits.

    Roach and Rudd

Often overlooked, these classic silver fish give light-tackle sport and are a great way to introduce newcomers to the joy of fishing.

    Getting Started

Begin by choosing a species and finding out where it lives locally. Speak to local anglers, read up on the best baits and seasons, and keep your tackle simple. Always check your rod licence and the rules of the water before you fish.

Whatever you choose, enjoy exploring. There is a lot more to coarse fishing than carp, and discovering it is half the fun.

More Ways to Enjoy Coarse Fishing

Trying different species is also a great excuse to visit new places. Canals, small rivers, village ponds and large reservoirs each offer their own challenges and rewards, and every venue teaches you something new about watercraft. Keep a notebook of what works, take a friend along and share the experience. Over time you will build a varied skill set that makes you a more confident and adaptable angler, whatever you decide to target next.
